What is Motivational Interviewing?
"Motivational Interviewing is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment."

My Philosophy

Rooted in the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing

Intimate coaching training session with professionals engaged in dialogue
01

Express Empathy

Understanding your client's world through reflective listening creates the foundation for all meaningful change.

02

Curiosity First

Gently illuminating the gap between where someone is and where they want to be ignites intrinsic motivation.

03

Support Self-Efficacy

Reinforcing a person's belief in their ability to change is the catalyst for lasting transformation.

04

Planning for Sustainability

Building concrete, actionable plans ensures that meaningful change doesn't stop at the conversation — it endures.

Why This Work

What You Can Expect of Me

Trained in the room, not in a slide deck

I have been training Motivational Interviewing since 2011, and have taught, coached and run train-the-trainer programmes for more than a thousand practitioners — in corrections, health care, addictions and social services. I design curriculum for the pressure people actually work under, not for the version of the job that exists in a manual.

The evidence, including the inconvenient parts

Every paper I publish names what the research does not support. Communication training does not reduce thirty-day readmissions. Where medication exists, the medication does most of the work. You will hear the limits of this from me before you hear them from anyone else, because an overclaim is what gets a good argument dismissed.

Still in practice, still being corrected

I contribute to the Professional Development Committee at MINT and mentor new members. Fifteen years into this work I went back to study adult education, because what I think I know about teaching people should keep being tested. I have changed how I teach because of findings that did not flatter what I sell. I would rather be accurate than impressive.
